Our Peer Mentors are upper-year Georgian students who play a pivotal role in building community, a sense of belonging and connection at Georgian@ILAC, and empower students to flourish through their first-year experience at college and beyond.
Now more than ever, students are connecting with their peers for support, highlighting the incredible importance of building a strong foundation and sense of virtual community among students early in their academic journey.
Peer Mentors are Georgian@ILAC students who:

- build trusting and supportive relationships
- facilitate peer-to-peer discussion and connection

- provide referrals and resources for students

We continually seek tutors throughout the year in most programs. Tutoring hires students with 80% average and strong interpersonal skills. Paid tutoring positions are available in most programs available on campus. Tutors work flexible hours, according to their availability and the student’s timetable. Tutoring is a great experience and looks good on a resume!
What is Tutoring and Why?
Tutoring program helps students flourish academically. Regular tutoring has been shown to increase the likelihood of continuing into the next semester. Students who meet with a drop-in Tutor regularly have been shown to have a higher GPA than their peers.

Who is a Tutor?
Tutors are current and trained Georgian students who:
- received 80% in the course they are tutoring
- are recommended by their professors
- remain in good academic standing

Looking for a Tutoring Session ?
All current students are allowed to book tutoring sessions with tutors based on availability.
Position Title: Tutor
Department: Academic Success
Campus: GC@ILAC Toronto Campus
Hours: Up to 10 hours/week
Tutors help other Georgian students flourish by sharing tips and strategies that are supportive to the learning process. Tutors work online or in person in small groups, or in a one-on-one session with a student. The goal of tutoring is to help prepare students to become successful independent learners.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Use non-directive coaching to help students understand course concepts
- Provide advice on effective study skills and strategies to enhance learning new information
- Set SMART (Specific, Measurable Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound) goals for each tutoring session with a student driven agenda
- Actively listen and paraphrase in the tutoring process
- Create and maintain a safe and nonjudgmental tutoring environment
- Provide excellent customer service to students
- Refer students to appropriate campus services for additional support
- Respond to email requests and complete administrative tasks in a timely manner
- Provide tutoring support in an online/in person setting
- Set and maintain professional boundaries and working relationships
- Maintain confidentiality
- Participate in additional training workshops as required
- Must be a current Georgian at ILAC (Toronto) college student
- Must have completed 50% of the program course work
- Preference given to students with 80% average or higher average
- Must be living in Ontario for duration of employment
- Must maintain good academic standing
- Strong customer service, interpersonal skills, and critical thinking skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently
- Proven time management habits
- Must have strong computer literacy skills
- Experience using screen sharing technology
- Laptop with strong internet connection, microphone, and camera when working online
- CRLA training certificate and past tutoring experience is an asset

FAQ: Georgian@ILAC Tutoring
Online tutoring is provided using Zoom or Microsoft Teams. You and the tutor determine which platform will work best for both of you.
Be prepared to share your work electronically. Although we will not help with your assignment, we may refer to it for clarification on concepts you need assistance with. Have a specific goal in mind for your session.
No. Tutors are not allowed to assist you with your assignment or assessment (test, exam, etc.). Tutors are required to report academic misconduct to their Academic Success team lead. Review Georgian’s regulation on academic integrity for further information.
Tutors will coach you using tips and strategies to improve and build your learning and study skills. Each tutoring session will have specific and realistic goals that you help create. Tutors must always adhere to Georgian’s academic integrity.

No, tutoring is free to Georgian at ILAC students.

Georgian@ILAC Food Locker
The Georgian@ILAC Food Locker is a confidential on-campus food bank for Georgian@ILAC students who are facing food insecurity. Please be considerate of others and only apply if you are in emergency need. The Georgian@ILAC Food Locker is operated by the Student Services Team and is supported by volunteers and community donations.
After submitting, you will receive a confirmation e-mail. Food Locker staff will fulfill eligible requests within 10 business days. When your bag is ready to be picked up, you will receive an email with your pick-up deadline. Please pick up your bag within the deadline. Requests made within 14 days of each other will not be fulfilled and you can only make 4 requests a semester.
Note: We cannot provide for specialty diets (i.e., peanuts, vegan, halal, perishable) due to a lack of resources and training.
